Welcome
I envision a future where
anesthesiologists are paid fairly, direct perioperative care in
every institution with surgery, and are understood
by the public to be physicians, indispensable for safety.
I envision an ASA where every anesthesiologist is a
member, and finds great value in the Society.
My strategic priorities include fair payments for anesthesiologists, safe anesthetics for our patients, and clear communications to the public and our members. Medicare rates are inadequate and cannot be allowed in new plans. Accountable care organizations should include a perioperative home for patients, run by anesthesiologists. Every patient deserves to have an anesthesiologist involved with his or her care, and physician extenders require physician direction. The most efficient and lowest cost anesthesia care is that with the best outcomes, provided by anesthesiologists.
We need strong coalitions to advance our goals. The ASA will grow together with its components, foundations and subspecialty societies. National anesthesiology practices, private and academic groups, and uniformed members have unique challenges that we need to understand and include in the ASA. A coalition of surgeons and anesthesiologists can effectively advocate for specialty care. Members of the public who understand anesthesiology can communicate for us, very effectively, with the public at large.
This is an important time. We must work now to protect our future as regulatory agencies seek to implement healthcare reform. Special challenges include innovative payment schemes such as accountable care organizations, scope of practice expansion by non-physicians, and false messaging by others.
My passions include health policy, proactive communications, and representing anesthesiologists. I love to practice anesthesiology and see advocacy as another side of professional practice. I’m proud of my ASA service as a committee member, director and society vice president. I ask for your support as your First Vice President. I commit to work energetically for all anesthesiologists to secure our future.
