Robert E. Johnstone, M.D.
This is an important time for anesthesiologists. We must communicate effectively our positions as President Obama and Congress bring healthcare reform to the national forefront. We should protect the gains we won with the correction of the Medicare teaching rule and secure our position as the leader of perioperative medicine. We need advocacy to promote patient safety and a voice to inform the public that healthcare without anesthesiologists is unimaginable.
Our goals include safe anesthetics for our patients, support for our quality initiatives, and adequate payments to recruit and build our practices. Medicare rates are inadequate and cannot be allowed in any new plans.
I love to practice anesthesiology and see advocacy as another aspect of professional practice. I'm proud of my service as Vice President for Professional Affairs and ask your support as I continue to tell the public about us. I commit to work energetically for all anesthesiologists.
